During the naturalization process of becoming a United States citizen, the applicant must take a two part test; an English test and a civics test.
The English test measures your proficiency in the English language regarding the applicant’s speaking, reading and writing.
● Speaking: a USCIS officer will measure the applicant’s ability to speak and understand English.
● Reading: the applicant will be required to read aloud one of three sentences in English correctly.
● Writing: the applicant will be required to write one of three sentences in English correctly.
Additionally, the applicant has to complete both the 2008 and 2020 versions of the civics test. Both versions of the test are conducted orally. For the 2008 version of the civics test, the applicant must correctly answer 6 out of 10 questions correctly from a list of 100 questions. For the 2020 version of the civics test, the applicant must correctly answer 12 out of 20 questions prompted from a list of 128 questions.
An applicant is given two attempts to retake the English and civics tests. If the applicant does not pass the attempts, they will be able to retake the tests between 60 to 90 days after the initial naturalization interview.
